Finding the Perfect Summer Camp: A Director’s Advice

As the camp director of Swift Nature Camp since 1997, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can feel to choose the right summer camp for your child. With so many options—overnight camp, adventure camps, co-ed programs, nature-focused experiences—it’s hard to know where to start. But after decades of guiding families, I can tell you that finding the perfect camp comes down to a few key factors.

Start with Your Child’s Needs

The first step in choosing a camp is understanding what works best for your child’s personality, interests, and comfort level. Ask yourself:
✅ Does my child thrive in structured programs or prefer more flexibility?
✅ Are they ready for an overnight camp experience, or would a shorter session be better?
✅ What activities excite them—canoeing, science, horseback riding, or outdoor survival?
✅ Would they prefer a smaller, close-knit camp or a larger, bustling environment?

At Swift Nature Camp, we offer a mix of adventure, nature education, and traditional camp fun, giving kids the chance to explore everything from fishing and swimming to animal care and environmental science.

Visit, Ask Questions, and Research

camp visit—either in person or virtually—can give you a sense of a camp’s culture, safety standards, and program offeringsTalk to camp directors, ask about staff training, and request references from other parents. Camps accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA) meet the highest safety and program standards, so it’s always a good idea to check for accreditation.

We encourage parents to attend an open house or schedule a call with us to learn more about our small-group structure, individualized attention, and focus on outdoor education.

Safety and Communication Matter

One of the most common concerns I hear from parents is safety. That’s why we prioritize a low camper-to-staff ratio, trained medical personnel on-site, and clear communication with parents throughout the summer. Whether your child has dietary restrictions, medical needs, or is just feeling a little homesick, a great camp will have protocols in place to ensure a positive experience.

Camp is More Than Just Activities—It’s About Growth

At Swift Nature Camp, we believe camp isn’t just about fun—it’s about building independence, resilience, and confidence. Kids today spend so much time on screens that they rarely get the chance to unplug, take risks, and form real-world friendships. That’s why we create an inclusive, supportive environment where campers try new things, overcome challenges, and grow into their best selves.

Trust the Process—And Your Instincts

As parents, you know your child best. Listen to their interests, but also trust your instincts when choosing a camp that will challenge, nurture, and inspire themThe right camp experience can be life-changing—giving your child lifelong friendships, new skills, and confidence that lasts long after summer ends.

If you’re looking for a safe, fun, and enriching summer camp where your child can explore nature, make new friends, and grow in confidence, we’d love to welcome them to Swift Nature Camp this summer. Please give me a call at 630-654-8036
