Overnight Summer Camp For Illinois Kids: Adventure, Nature, and Independence

Dear Families,

Swift Nature Camp is a premier summer camp for boys and girls ages 6-17, located conveniently near Illinois. We use fun camp activities along with a specialized Camp Zoo and Nature Center to increase a child's appreciation for animals, nature, and the environment. Yet, summer camp offers much more than just fun and learning about the world around us; our First Timer 1-week overnight camp is the exclusive program only for first-time camper to which helps create a special journey to maturity

Swift prides it's self on a child-centered program perfect for Chicagoland kids. It provides a necessary sanctuary away from technology, celebrity culture, and academic pressures. Through engaging activities and positive staff role models, we help children develop lifelong skills such as confidence, teamwork, leadership, compassion, and communication. We are very intentional about everything we do at Swift Nature Camp and are the closest Northwoods experience to Chicago.

The Northwoods: Why "Far Away" Creates the Best Overnight Summer Camp

As parents it can be hard to entertain sending your child to a sleepaway camp that isn't just down the street. But there is a biological and emotional magic that only happens when you leave the city lights behind.

In the Northwoods, the world changes. Without the hum of car traffic and the glow of streetlights, children experience a sky filled with more stars than they ever thought possible. They swap the sound of sirens for the call of a loon or the rustle of wind through the pines.

Why choose a camp so far from home?

  • A True Escape: Being physically removed from their daily environment allows kids to mentally "unplug." They aren't just at camp; they are in a different world.
  • Creating Lasting Memories: The "soft fascination" of nature—the crackle of a campfire and the silence of the woods—creates deep, restorative memories that stay with a child long after they return to the suburbs.
  • Building a Summer Home: Because Swift is tucked away in the wilderness, it becomes a sanctuary. It isn't just a place they go; it is their summer home, a secret world they look forward to returning to every single year. We have campers returning for years some from age 7-17

Note from Lonnie: The Magic of a PurposeChildren at the Swift Nature Camp zoo near Illinois

"As the Director of SNC for over 30 years I have many stories but this one stays in my head It is about a first time camper,  a young girl who came to us from the Chicago suburbs. During her first few days, the weight of being away from home felt heavy; she was quiet and tearful. I decided to take her on a quiet walk over to our Camp Zoo.

As we walked through the Nature Center, she spotted a small, fluffy bunny. I told her that this bunny needed someone special to look after it, and I asked if she would 'adopt' it for her stay at camp. Magically, her entire demeanor shifted. Having a little friend to care for gave her a sense of purpose. Instead of focusing on what she was missing at home, she became engaged in the love and responsibility the bunny needed.

By the end of the week, she wasn't just participating; she was leading others to the zoo to introduce them to her friend. That’s the power of Animals at Camp—it gives children a way to connect that goes beyond words."Lonnie, Director

Growth, Friendship, and Leadership at Camp

At Swift Nature Camp, our small size allows us to promote each child's personal development in a supportive and noncompetitive environment away from home.

  • Practical Independence: While home is your time to plant the seeds of character, at a summer camp, children have an opportunity to act on their own and be self-reliant.
  • A New Beginning: Overnight summer camp provides a fresh start. Who you were before has no bearing on who you want to be here.
  • The "Real Self": Many of our campers return year after year, saying that "Swift allows me to be my real self with real people." To put it in one word, summer at an sleep-away camp with Il. kids provides independence.

🚌 Easy Transportation for Chicago Families

Sure as a parent you can drive your camper to camp. After all you probably want to see the SNC and have a tour. Yet, we make the journey simple. SNC does charter a private motor coach that takes campers directly to camp from:
