Swift Nature Camp is an overnight summer camp that focuses on nature and outdoor activities, and we have seen firsthand the power of shared interests in creating lasting friendships. When children come to our camp, they are surrounded by others who share their love of nature and the outdoors. This common ground is a powerful force in bringing kids together and fostering connections that can last a lifetime.
At Swift Nature Camp, we offer a wide range of activities, including hiking, fishing, canoeing, and archery. These activities appeal to a variety of interests, and we encourage our campers to explore and try new things. When children participate in these activities with their fellow campers, they not only build new skills but also form connections with others who share their passion.
One of the great things about shared interests is that they can help children feel like they belong. When children come to Swift Nature Camp, they become part of a community of nature lovers. They can find acceptance and support from others who share their interests, which can be especially important for kids who may not have found that kind of community at home.
Shared interests at overnight summer camps can also be a source of inspiration and motivation. When children see their fellow campers achieving their goals and improving their skills, it can motivate them to work harder and strive for their own success. This can lead to a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence that can carry over into other areas of their lives.
Another great thing about shared interests is that they provide a natural conversation starter. When children meet someone new at camp, they can easily start a conversation about their favorite activity or hobby. This can help break the ice and make it easier for kids to form friendships with their fellow campers.
Finally, shared interests can make activities more enjoyable and exciting. When children are doing something they love with their friends, they are more likely to have fun and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it's catching their first fish or reaching the top of a mountain, the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie that comes from shared interests can be truly unforgettable.
In conclusion, shared interests are a powerful force in creating friendships that last a lifetime. At Swift Nature Camp, we have seen how a shared love of nature and the outdoors can bring children together and foster connections that endure beyond the summer months. If you're considering sending your child to a summer camp, we encourage you to think about the power of shared interests in creating a memorable and rewarding experience.

What do Emma Roberts, Lisa Loeb, Blair Underwood, Frank Sesno, Ashlan Gorse, and Lisa Raye have in common? They all believe who they are today is, at least partly, because of camp. Many of todays adults have fond memories of Summer Camp and realize it is about so much more than fun. BECAUSE OF CAMP.
Summer camps are healthy! Exercise is a part of any child’s life of play, and camp is a natural provider of constant, safe, imaginative physical play. This brings opportunities for every camper’s intellect and imagination to get plenty of exercise at the same time.
Kids at coed camps learn how to relate with members of the other gender as friends and equals. Skills of social interaction are creative and independent but stay in keeping with each child’s family teachings. Guided by adult friends and capable role models, counselors, campers get a valuable chance to apply what they have been taught at home in a larger social world.
Campers grow to find and be themselves, in a natural setting that gently challenges a child to newer and higher standards for their own behavior. The kids camp daily context is activities that encourage perseverance, listening skills, teamwork, and the ability to recognize similarities and appreciate differences in each individual. If it’s a nature camp or an animals camp, kids get even more opportunities to relate with the creatures of the natural worlds around us. Self discovery can become a habit that lasts a lifetime.
Jeff and Lonnie Lorenz, directors of Wisconsin’s Swift Nature Camp for almost fifteen years, believe summer camp is a unique opportunity for dimensional childcare at the best value. The camp experience will add to ordinary child care the making of memories, the opportunity to come to a new place and try new things, the chance to gain skills and independence, and the time to make new and lifelong friends.
For those who have been around Swift for some time, you know camp friends are unlike any other friends. Last week when we were in Minneapolis we had Jess (now living in AZ) stop by and visit. Jess has been involved with camp since she was 18. Now 10 years later she looked back fondly at all that she had accomplished at Swift. From Water Front to Assistant Director. She did it all. This is why we love Swift so ...it’s great to see folks grow and develop at camp...
After watching this I was so touched I had to put it here. I hope that some of our summer camp kids feel this good after coming to camp.

Famed author Richard Louv, of Last Child in the Woods: is alarmed by this untouching of nature. He calls it Nature-deficit disorder and sad situation in child development. He feels there is a link between lack of outdoor play and and increase in obesity, attention disorders, and depression.
Summer Camp is just one place that can help children learn to appreciate nature as well as teach children independence and friendship....
Outside you get to run around, be free of all those indoor limitations, and become whoever the game requires. At SNC Outdoor play is a group activity. It is all bout you and your cabinmate not about who wins. This helps build important relationships, human connections that tend to run much deeper than other relationships. It has long been said thzt camp friends are true friends Perhaps this begins to explain why girls say their camp friends are their absolute best friends perhapps outdoor play is just one of the forces that make camp friends so strong.
