A 1-Week Overnight Summer Camp Chicago Kids Love
Each winter and spring, parents around Chicago begin searching for the same thing: a safe and exciting overnight summer camp where their child can try sleepaway camp for the first time.
Many families want the benefits of a traditional outdoor camp but are not ready to commit to several weeks away from home. That’s why a 1-week overnight summer camp has become such a popular option for first-time campers.
At Swift Nature Camp, many campers come from Chicago and throughout Illinois to experience a week filled with nature, adventure, animals, and new friendships.
Why Chicago Parents Choose a 1-Week Sleepaway Camp
Trying overnight camp for the first time can feel like a big step. A one-week session gives children the chance to experience the fun of sleepaway camp while still feeling comfortable knowing they’ll be home soon.
In just one week campers can:
-
Make close cabin friends
-
Learn camp routines
-
Try activities like canoeing and nature hikes
-
Care for animals in the Nature Center
-
Build confidence and independence
Many Chicago families find that one week is the perfect introduction to overnight camp. After their first experience, kids often can’t wait to return.

Easy Transportation from Chicago to Camp
Although Swift Nature Camp is located in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, getting there from Chicago is simple. Each summer we organize motorcoach transportation from the Chicagoland area, allowing campers from all over Chicagoland to travel together safely with staff supervision. We have 2 pickup locations in Schaumburg and Boilingbrook Il. For many kids, the bus ride becomes the first exciting part of their camp adventure. Our on board staff work hard to make sure campers feel comfortable on the bus ride and are sure to make their first camp friend.
Parents often tell us they love that their child can experience a true Northwoods overnight summer camp without needing to drive several hours themselves. Yet, many parents often make the drive to camp the first time, just to see what it is like.

A First Week at Camp – One Chicago Camper’s Story
Last summer a parent from Chicago called us about their son Ethan. Like many kids trying an overnight summer camp for the first time, Ethan was excited but also a little nervous about being away from home.
His parents liked the idea of a 1-week session because it felt like the perfect introduction to sleepaway camp. They also appreciated that campers from Chicago could travel together by motorcoach to Swift Nature Camp in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin.
The first evening at camp Ethan met the boys in his cabin, explored the Nature Center, and helped feed some of the animals. The next morning he was out on the lake learning to canoe and later that afternoon he was building a small habitat for turtles with his nature class.
By the middle of the week his counselors told us something we hear often — Ethan had completely forgotten he had been nervous. He was busy playing games with his cabin mates, hiking the forest trails, and proudly helping care for animals in the Nature Center.
When the bus returned to Chicago at the end of the week, his parents told us the ride home was filled with stories about new adventures, campfires, and friends. Before they even got home, Ethan was already asking if he could come back next summer.
That’s the kind of experience we design for every camper — a week where they discover new confidence, new friendships, and a love for the outdoors. Read more summer camp reviews
