Our Purpose: Matching Science to the Developing Mind
As camp directors for over 30 years, we’ve seen a consistent truth: as children grow into teenagers, their relationship with the world changes. At Swift Nature Camp, our purpose is to make environmental education both meaningful and age-appropriate. We don’t believe in a "one size fits all" approach to nature.
Instead, we match our curriculum to the camper's developmental stage—ensuring that a 9-year-old feels wonder, while a 15-year-old feels the call to lead and take responsibility.
Younger Campers: The Wonder of Wildlife & Biology
For our younger and
-
Basic Biology: Identifying the animals in our "Camp Zoo" and understanding their habitats.
-
Wildlife Observation: Learning to sit quietly and observe a bald eagle or track a deer through the woods.
-
Nature Quest: Fun, hands-on activities that build a foundational love for the outdoors.
Older Campers: Rigorous Ecology & The Grit of Stewardship
As our campers get older, summer becomes more than just "fun"—it becomes foundational. For the teenager standing at the edge of young adulthood, our Environmental Science programs shift toward a more in-depth, rigorous ecological study.
-
Field Research: Older campers engage in active stewardship, like water quality testing or participating in wildlife conservation projects.
-
The Ecology of Resilience: This is where adventure trips come in. Whether it’s a multi-day canoe trip or a backpacking expedition, we use the Northwoods to teach grit. As one camper famously told us after a grueling trip: "Lonnie, if I can survive that, I feel like I can do anything."
A World of Discovery: Land & Water Activities
At Swift Nature Camp, we are more than just a place to stay; we are a place to do. We believe that being outdoors is the best way to build confidence. Our daily schedule is packed with a diverse range of land and water activities designed to help every child find their spark. Whether your child is a "fish" who loves the lake or a "landlubber" who prefers the forest floor, there is always something new to master.
On the Water
Our spring-fed lake is the heart of the SNC experience. Campers learn coordination and water safety through:
-
Canoeing & Kayaking: Mastering the paddle on calm morning waters.
-
Swimming: Daily cool-downs and structured lessons.
-
Fishing: Learning about local fish species and the patience of the catch.
-
Sailing & Tubing: Gaining balance and understanding.
On the Land
Our 80-acre camp and surrounding county forest is a playground for developing wilderness skills and athletic coordination:
-
Archery & Slingshots: Focus, discipline, and hitting the mark.
-
Team Sports: Non-competitive soccer, basketball, and "camp-style" games that build friendships.
-
Nature Center & Zoo: Hands-on animal care and wildlife biology.
-
Arts & Crafts: Bringing the inspiration of the woods into creative projects.
-
Hiking & Backpacking: Preparing for the big adventure trips through local trail exploration.
Where the Adventure Begins: A Note from Jeff
w"I have watched campers for over 30 years and while life at camp is full of discovery, the true adventure often starts when we head out beyond the camp gates. Our out-of-camp canoe and backpacking trips are where the lessons of ecology and wildlife biology truly come to life.
When our teenagers hit the trail or the river for a multi-day expedition, they aren't just traveling; they are learning to read the landscape. They’ll see bald eagles nesting in the white pines, track timber wolves along the riverbanks, and identify rare wildflowers in hidden meadows. But more importantly, they learn the wilderness skills of navigation, fire-building, and teamwork. These trips teach a level of resilience you simply can't find in a classroom. Watching a group of kids navigate a challenging portage or cook their own meal over an open fire after a long day of paddling is seeing growth in its purest form. They return to camp not just as campers, but as capable, confident stewards of the wild." — Jeff Lorenz, Director
More Than a Classroom: A Community of Kindness
Whether a child is studying wildlife biology or mastering wilderness skills, they are doing it within a community that prioritizes being accepting and k
ind. We believe that true learning only happens when a child feels they belong. By removing the pressure to "fit in," we allow them to focus on the wonders of the natural world and the strength within themselves.

Top 8 Parent Q&As for Swift Nature Camp
1. How do I know if my child is ready for an overnight summer camp? Most children are ready for their first experience away from home when they show small signs of independence, like handling sleepovers or managing basic routines. However, readiness is more about support than confidence. Our Discovery Camp is exclusively for first-time campers, providing the extra staff and structure needed to help them succeed, even if they feel a little nervous.
2. Is a 1-week overnight camp long enough for a first-timer? Yes! A 1-week sleepaway camp is often the perfect "starter experience."
3. What happens if my child gets homesick? Homesickness is a normal part of learning independence.
4. Is overnight summer camp safe? Safety is our first priority. We maintain high staff-to-camper ratios, and all counselors undergo rigorous background checks and training.
5. How will my child make friends at camp? Camp is designed to foster connection.
6. What should my child pack for their first time at camp? Keep it simple! We recommend comfortable clothes, a flashlight, sunscreen, and a "comfort item" from home.
7. Is there transportation from the Chicago area? Yes. To make things easy for our Illinois families, we provide supervised motorcoach transportation from the Chicago suburbs.
8. What makes Swift Nature Camp different from other Midwest camps? We are a small, personal camp that focuses on nature, animals, and discovery. Unlike large "industrial" camps, every child is known by name here. Our blend of wildlife biology, adventure trips, and a supportive, screen-free community helps children grow into resilient leaders.
