Swift Nature Camp
First Time at Overnight Camp – A Parent’s Guide 2026

Wisconsin overnight summer camp

Starter Camp-A Gentle Path to Independence

Dear Parents, Sending your child to their first overnight summer camp is exciting—and we know it can be a little nerve-racking for parents, too. At Swift Nature Camp, we have helped thousands of children from Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota navigate this big step in a safe, supportive environment. Our Discovery Camp is specifically designed only for the first-time camper, providing a 7-day session that acts as the perfect introduction to sleepaway camp life. To make this week special, we focus on "first-time wins." Whether it’s catching that first fish, finding a new best friend, or just playing with Bubba the pig, we ensure your child feels like a hero from day one.Turning Fear into Courage is how we how we manage Homesickness.

We don't just hope children won't be homesick; we proactively build a "safety net" of belonging so no child feels isolated.

  • The Power of Belonging: From the moment they step off the bus or get out of your vehicle, we immerse campers in group games and "get-to-know-you" activities. When a child feels they belong to a group, fear naturally starts to fade.

  • Overcoming the "Quiet Moments": Homesickness usually strikes during downtime. That’s why we keep our schedule full of "soft fascination" activities. If a child feels a wave of missing home, a counselor is right there to redirect them to a bunny that needs petting or a friendship bracelet that needs a finishing knot.
  • Camp Counselors: Are caring and compassionate, they are there to make every camper feel cared for. They are trained to spot the "quiet" child who might be isolating themselves. They step in with a kind word, a shared joke, or a gentle invitation to join the fun.

The "Camp Mom" Difference: Helping Kids Adjust

"As a mother, I know that 'safety' isn't just about band-aids and lifeguards; it’s about the heart. Being the 'Camp Mom' means I take every child’s happiness personally. I’m there to offer a hug when someone is feeling small and a high-five when they do something big. I make sure every child feels noticed and valued. Our small camp size means your child is a part of our family, never just a number." — Lonnie, Director, camp director for 30+ years

A Watchful Eye on Safety

We understand that physical safety is the foundation of emotional comfort. We maintain an industry-leading 1:3 staff-to-camper ratio, ensuring constant supervision.
  • On-Site Medical Care: A Registered Nurse (RN) lives right here at camp, available 24/7.
  • Waterfront Safety: All swimming and lake activities are led by certified Lifeguards.
  • Proactive Supervision: Our staff is trained to have a watchful eye, stopping horseplay before it leads to injury, so children can play safely and without fear.

Adventure with a Safety Net

We balance safety with adventure and responsibility with play. Your child will enjoy over 40 classic camp activities:
  • Nature & Animals: Exploring the Northwoods and caring for animals in our Nature Center.
  • Active Fun: Hiking, canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, fishing, swimming, tubing, Lego, pet care, campfires and more

🌲 First-Time Camper: Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if my child gets homesick? Homesickness is a natural feeling of missing what we love, but at Swift, we don't let it become a lonely experience. We use a proactive approach by keeping campers busy with "first-day wins" and friendship-building games. With Lonnie as our "Camp Mom" and our dedicated adult mentors, your child will always have a kind ear and a supportive shoulder to help them choose courage over comfort.

2. How do you help a child who is afraid of trying new things? We specialize in "gentle encouragement." Because we are a non-competitive camp, there is no pressure to be the best. Whether it’s holding a bunny for the first time or stepping into a canoe, our counselors break activities down into small, successful steps. We celebrate the effort just as much as the achievement, which helps children move past their fears and build true confidence.

3. Will my child feel isolated or lonely? Never. Our "small by design" community is built on the idea of a camp family. From the moment your child arrives, they are part of a cabin group that eats, plays, and explores together. Our 1:2 staff-to-camper ratio ensures that no child "fades into the background." If a counselor sees a child sitting out, they are trained to gently invite them in or find an activity that sparks their interest.

4. Is there someone on-site to handle medical or emotional needs? Yes. For your peace of mind, we have a Registered Nurse (RN) who lives at camp 24/7. Beyond physical health, Lonnie (our Director) oversees the emotional well-being of every camper. We believe that emotional safety is just as important as physical safety, and we treat every scraped knee or nervous moment with the same level of care and compassion.

5. How do you keep the camp environment safe and "bully-free"? Our "watchful eye" policy means we are constantly supervising social dynamics. We stop "horseplay" and unkind words before they can escalate, fostering an environment of kindness and respect. We model compassion, and because our counselors are mentors rather than just supervisors, they create a culture where every child feels valued and protected. After all it's our tag line "Where Kindness Matters"

6. What makes the 1-Week Discovery Session best for beginners? Think of the 7-day session as a "stepping stone." It is long enough for your child to experience all the classic fun of camp—like campfires and animal care—but short enough to be a guaranteed success. Our goal is for your child to leave with a sense of "I did it!" which paves the way for a lifetime of independence. Often our Discovery campers return that same summer for a longer session.

7. Can I check in on how my child is doing? We know that "no news is good news" can be hard for a first-time parent! We encourage a "partnership in parenting." While we encourage children to unplug and find their own independence, Lonnie and our team are always working behind the scenes to ensure your child is thriving. We treat your camper like they are our own, providing the same love and boundaries we would give our own children. You are welcome to call daily if you like to see how your camper is doing.
