Minnesota Zoo & Animal Summer Camp for Kids
2026

Animal Camp MN

A Nature & Science Adventure Just 2 Hours from the Twin Cities

As the Camp Director (and "Camp Mom") at Swift Nature Camp for over 30 years, I’ve seen firsthand how animals can transform a child's summer. If you are looking for a Minnesota animal camp or a science-focused summer program, our Northwoods sanctuary offers the perfect blend of hands-on learning and traditional outdoor fun.

Why SNC is the Top Choice for MN Animal Lovers

At Swift Nature Camp, animals aren't just a side activity—they are at the heart of our community. Unlike a typical day-only zoo camp, our residential program allows children to truly immerse themselves in wildlife care and environmental science.

  • Hands-On Nature Center: Campers develop empathy and responsibility while caring for our camp pets and learning about Minnesota wildlife.

  • Junior Zookeeper Experience: From feeding and watering to learning about habitats, kids get a "behind-the-scenes" look at animal care.

  • Science & Nature Discovery: Our program serves as a premier science summer camp, where the Northwoods becomes a living laboratory for exploration.

More Than Just an Animal Camp: Classic Northwoods Fun

We combine our passion for nature and critters with over 60 traditional activities. This is the fun Minnesota summer camp experience your child has been dreaming of:

  • Waterfront Adventures: Swimming, canoeing, and fishing on our pristine lake.

  • Active Land Sports: Archery, sling-shots, and team-building games.

  • Creative Exploration: Legos, skits, clowning, and specialized nature crafts.

A Safe, Screen-Free Environment for Minnesota Families

We know MN families prioritize safety and character. Our non-competitive summer camp environment is designed to build confidence without the pressure of sports or screens.

  • Experienced Leadership: Directed by Lonnie and Jeff Lorenz for 30+ years.

  • Safety First: On-site RN and a highly trained, background-checked counseling staff.

  • Intentional Community: We focus on mentorship, ensuring every child feels seen and supported.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much "hands-on" time do kids get with animals?

At Swift Nature Camp, animals are a part of daily life. Campers don't just look at animals through a fence; they help feed, water, and care for the residents of our Nature Center and Camp Zoo. Under the guidance of our experienced staff, children develop a deep sense of responsibility and empathy through daily direct interaction with everything from our camp pet pig, Bubba, to furry and scaly pets plus you can see local Minnesota wildlife.

Is this a good choice for children who aren't "sporty"?

Absolutely. We pride ourselves on being a non-competitive summer camp. While we offer over 60 activities like swimming and archery, our focus is on nature exploration, science, and creative arts. It’s the perfect environment for "non-sports" kids to build confidence and make lifelong friends just like themselves without the pressure of athletic competition.

How do I know my child will be safe and supported?

Safety is our top priority. Directors Lonnie and Jeff Lorenz have been leading Swift Nature Camp for over 30 years, treating every camper like a member of their own family. With a licensed RN on-site and a highly trained counseling staff, we provide a nurturing "Camp Mom" atmosphere that ensures even first-time campers feel secure and at home in the Northwoods.

What makes your "Science Camp" approach different?

We believe the best way to learn science is to live it. Our science summer camp activities turn the Northwoods into a living laboratory. Campers engage in pond life studies, forest ecology, and wildlife biology in a way that feels like an adventure, not a classroom. It’s hands-on STEM learning fueled by curiosity and outdoor fun.

Is the camp easy to get to from the Twin Cities?

Yes! We are a popular choice for Minnesota families because our location is just a 2-hour drive from Minneapolis and St. Paul. This makes it convenient for drop-off and pick-up while still providing that essential "away-from-it-all" Northwoods experience that helps children unplug and recharge.
